Facebook is the largest social media platform with 2.958 billion active users on a monthly cycle, according to Datareportal 2023 statistics. What does this mean? There’s no better place  for an ecommerce enterprise to reach customers than in the gigantic pool of Facebook users for free.

Having sold products on the  Facebook Marketplace since 2019, here are 10 wizardly secrets that I have come to learn over time.

1.Join relevant Facebook groups

Join as many groups as you can that are in alignment to what you are selling. For Instance, if you sell brand new  electronic gadgets, then joining a group with the header “ Second Hand Resellers “ won’t  be relevant.

Secret : Any post you make in a Facebook group will appear on the marketplace section. So if you post in 3 different groups, your post will appear three times in the online marketplace. This is great news because the more publications you have, the higher the likelihood of them being seen by customers

2. Open a business page

A business page allows you to interact with your customers and showcase your products without limitations on the type, number and frequency of posts you make .

Secret : You cannot post directly  to the marketplace via your page. Instead, do this.

Make  a post on your page and share it to your  Facebook group . The post on the group will then appear in the Facebook Marketplace.

See, simple!

3. Be descriptive on the title

The five must have details in your header are:

  • Name of Product
  • Pick up location
  • Condition
  • Price
  • Contact.

Secret :  Make the header short, simple and inclusive of all the elements.

4. Set a default reply

Customers  are going to start messaging you and do you know what the default marketplace message is?

“Is this available?”

Your heart will burst in ecstacy thinking that you are going to make a sale and so you reply. But what happens when you receive 50 similar messages of ” Is this available ?” Without making any sale yet you keep on replying to them? You lose momentum.

Secret: Set an automatic non-robotic  “personalized” reply like “Thank you for contacting us and the item is available. Please call us for any inquiry”. This will save you from  the mental exhaustion of replying to every request.

See, It’s easy!

5. Update status of the products you are selling

Say you have 50 items in stock and you’ve sold all of them. Go ahead and update the status to SOLD . Showing that the item is in stock yet there is none can put off clients who genuinely wanted to purchase. They will think you are a scam.

Why?

You are selling a product you don’t have

In contrast, If you were to update the status to SOLD, they might save your contact and revisit at a later  date hoping that you will restock. Even better, they might call to let you know that you contact them once the product is in stock.

What better way to retain a potential customer.

6. Add a logo/theme to your real time images

Use a consistent theme / logo in the images that you are displaying. Remember there are other similar products being sold by another e-commerce competitor.

If you set a specific theme to what you are publishing, it allows customers to build familiarity with your brand . Customers are watching even if they are not engaging or purchasing.

Let your images be real time as well other than just using the images displayed on the packaging of the product.

Compare the two images of a similar product in the image below? From which seller are you likely to buy from? Seller A or Seller B?

7. Renew your listing

Secret:  When you publish an item, it immediately takes the top position of similar listings in that it will appear at the top of most searches.

If your e-commerce competitors also publish within the course of the week, their listings will replace yours at the top position.

So what should you do?

Renew your listing after a week of publishing ( Marketplace does not allow you to renew your listing for a publication done less than a week). Renewing your post is a like a ” a fresh start” that allows you to claim back the top position

8. Search Engine Optimization tags

The description of your product should incorporate SEO. Also, put as many SEO tags  as possible in the tags area before publishing.

9. Encourage your customers to rate you

This builds customer credibility . There are a lot of scammers out there in the Facebook marketplace and plus rating is a necessary but not sufficient way of the believability of your business.

10. Be faithful

Let the price, size and quality of the product that you’ve posted be constant to what you are actually selling the customer. Selling faulty items to a customer who wants delivery of the products without physically inspecting them is taking away the prospect of a recurring sale.

There is this seller who changed the price of the product when I physically visited her shop. When I tried to browse and show her the post she had made, I found out that it had been deleted and there was no way to confirm her original post. I felt scammed.

Be faithful. Customers do appreciate it.

Cheers to selling online.
